Mindelo
Mindelo lies on the island of São Vicente and it is the liveliest city in Cabo Verde. For example musical bands perform in the city park's bandstand on Sundays. At the end of February in Mindelo the Cape Verde version of Rio's carnival is celebrated.
- The city hall of São Vicente is Paços do Concelho. It was built in the 1860's.
- Palácio do Povo is the former Government Palace and dates from 1874.
- The Cathilic Our Lady of the Light Cathedral was built in 1862.
- The Fortim d'El Rei is an old fortress that was constructed in 1852.
- On the waterfront sits the Torre de Belém. It is a copy of the Belém Tower in Lisbon. Construction started in 1918 and it was finished in 1937.
- Farol do Ilhéu dos Pássaros lighthouse sits on the island of Ilhéu dos Pássaros, not far from town.
- The former British Consulate dates from the 1870's.
The Centro Nacional de Artesanato e Design offers exhibitions from local craftsmen. It is housed in the building that used to be the home of senator Vera Cruz in the 19th century. The old Customs House was built in 1860 and is home to the Cultural Centre of Mindelo.
Explorer Diogo Afonso has a statue on Mindelo Beach and the statue of one of Cabo Verde's most famous writers, Baltasar Lopes da Silva, can also be seen in the city.
Mindelo has a lively Municipal market. That building dates from 1878.
Mindelo has the deepest port in Cape Verde, so most ships pass through the city. Mindelo is frequented by large cruise ships. In and around the harbor are numerous small bars, nightclubs and restaurants. There is more to do in Mindelo than in the capital of Praia.
