Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare is the northernmost of the 5 villages that comprise Cinque Terre. There are huge statues carved in the rocks overlooking the town and its nice beach.
The town consists of an old part and a new part, which are connected via a tunnel.
Points of interest
- Monterosso al Mare has an excellent Beach.
- The now ruined Castle was built by the Genoese.
- The Convent of Monterosso al Mare dominates Cinque Terre. It was built in 1600 and features numerous religious works of art.
- The Monterosso Giant is a huge statue that was carved out of the rocks and overlooks the town and its nice beach.
- The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist was constructed over a period from 1282 to 1307. It has a square bell-tower. There are four small marble columns in its façade and above its main portal you can see a fresco that depicts the baptism of Christ.
- The Santuario Nostra Signora di Saviore (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Saviore) is a shrine that is located on a 465 m high hill overlooking the town. The first church was built on the site in 740, but the current building was constructed later. It houses a wood statue of the Blessed Virgin holding the dead Christ in her arms. The statue dates from the 14th century. The Santuario can be reached by bus from the Piazza Garibaldi, or you can take a 1.5 hours hike.
There is some accommodation in Monterosso al Mare and there are several restaurants. It is also possible to stay at the Santuario. Monteroso al Mare is about 350 km northwest from Rome.
