Mopti (Mobti)

Mopti, or Mobti, is one of the largest cities on the Niger River, but its center is still compact enough to explore on foot. Mopti lies on the river's inland delta, at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers, about 630 km northeast of Bamako. Since it is the center of the local tourist industry, immediately after arrival you will be driven nuts by hordes of kids trying to sell you whatever they can. It is near impossible to get rid of them and they don't know the meaning of the word 'no'.

Be very careful in Mopti, as everyone knows everyone and before you know you are entangled in some sort of scam to get your money.

The city has a busy port where pirogue trips to nearby villages can be arranged. The market is also very busy and everything from carpets to jewelry and old masks is sold there.

Mopti's Great Mosque, or Komoguel Mosque, as its often referred to, is an excellent example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture, with its design based on the famous Great Mosque in Djenné. The current mosque was built on the site of an earlier one and dates from the 1930s. It has been restored in 1978 and 2006.

There is a lot of accommodation in town and there are many restaurants. Good food can also be purchased from street stalls. There is a gare routière in the south of Mopti, but most buses leave from Sévaré, a town a few kilometers away on the main road between Bamako and Goa. Sévaré is connected to Mopti by an elevated causeway.

Mopti is a good place to stay if you want to visit Mali's Dogon country, the Bandiagara escarpment, the stilt villages, or the tribe that has villages on tiny islands.
