Mount Everest

Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is often referred to as Qoomolangma and its peak rises 8848 m above sea level. The mountain's summit was first reached by Sir Edward Hillary in 1953 and has received many climbers ever since, several hundred of which died on the mountain.

Mount Everest sits on the border between China and Nepal. It can be reached from the Nepalese side by air from Kathmandu to Lukla after which a six to eight day hike to base camp is required. From the Chinese side expeditions usually trek to the Rongbuk Glacier and set up base camp there.

Permits are expensive on either side and summit attempts can only been made during a short period in summer, weather permitting.
