Mrauk U is a jungle town that can only be reached by riverboat on the Kaladan river. It used to be the capital of the powerful Rakhine Mrauk U Kingdom. The town is known for its Arakanese art and architecture, as well as its Buddhist temple ruins and it is culturally important for the local Rakhine people. It is also home to numerous archaeological sites.

One of the most stunning ruins is the 80,000 Pagoda, named after the 80,000 Buddah images found there. The ordination hall is also worth a look.

Most temples in Mrauk U are Buddhist ones, but there is also the old Shindhikhan Mosque, which dates from the reign of Min Saw Mon. You can see a Roman Catholic church in Mrauk U as well.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Mrauk U, but most people prefer to stay in Akyab (Sittwe), which has better facilities. Mrauk U lies in hill country, not far from the Bangladesh border, some 515 km northwest of Yangon (Rangoon) and is surrounded by jungle.
