Mthatha (Umtata)
Mthatha is also written as Umtata. It is in South Africa's Eastern Cape province, which during the times of Apartheid was known as Transkei. There is little of interest, apart from a small museum on the corner of Victoria and York Streets.
Long distance buses stop at the railway station and regional transportation can be found at the bus and minibus taxi park. There are numerous hotels and restaurants, as well as 'tea rooms' in town. Mthatha is on the Mthatha River, some 660 km south of Pretoria. Mthatha (Umtata) got its name from the sneezewood (umtati) trees that grow in the area. The trees are famous for their wood and medicinal properties.
