Mtunzini is a small fishing town that is a popular tourist destination. Mtunzini is renowned as one of the few places in South Africa where the rare palm-nut vulture can be seen. They feed exclusively on the fruit of the rafia palm, which the palms produce only once every 20 years or so. At the Rafia Palm Monument you can walk a raised boardwalk to have a close look at these fruits. There is a 9-hole golf course in Mtunzini, as well as pristine beaches. Be careful when swimming, as there are no shark nets and a shark breeding ground is nearby. The beach has excellent waves for surfing though.
Not far north of town is the Umlalazi Nature Reserve, where you can see numerous bird species and some crocodiles.
There are several hotels, camping grounds and restaurants in Mtunzini and you can also camp at the Nature Reserve. Mtunzini is 130 km northeast of Durban on the Indian Ocean coast and 505 km southeast of Pretoria.
