Nakhon Pathom is regarded as Thailand's oldest city and it is home to the orange tiled Phra Pathom Chedi (พระปฐมเจดีย), with its 127 m the tallest Buddhist monument in the world. Theravada Buddhists erected the original statue in the 6th century, but it was later amended several times by the Khmer, the Burmese and the Chinese and nowadays it is protected by a huge orange-glazed dome. In the north chapel is the 8-m tall standing Buddha of Phra Ruang Rochanarit.
At the southern entrance of Phra Pathom Chedi is the New museum. It has exhibitions of artifacts from the Dvaravati period that were discovered on the site, as well as a collection of Mon-style Buddha statues.
Also in Nakhon Pathom is Wat Song Thammakanlayani (วัดทรงธรรมกัลยาณี), Thailand's only Bhikkhuni temple. A campus of Silpakorn University is housed within the former Sanam Chan Palace. It is in the west of the city.
Wat Phra Praton Praton Chedi (พระประโทณเจดีย์) is a small, quiet temple that houses an ancient Khmer prang and a small shrine.
Not far from nakhon Pathom is Khlong Damnoen Saduak, which is an interesting floating market.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Nakhon Pathom. The city is 55 km west of Bangkok.
