Nanumea Atoll

Nanumea Atoll

Tuvalu's Nanumea Atoll is the most northerly and most populous of Tuvalu's outer islands. U.S. forces occupied it during WWII and evidence of their presence is still visible. Several wrecks of U.S. landing craft, as well as a B-24 bomber still sit on the atoll. For good views over Nanumea, you should ask the pastor if you can climb the tall German Gothic-style tower.

Accommodation is available on Nanumea. The atoll is 475 km (295 miles) northwest of Funafuti and accessible only by ship. It measures about 4km² (1.5 sq mi).
