The national park of American Samoa was created in 1988 and includes parts of four islands. The section on Tutuila is the most accessible and provides protection for a coral reef and some old-world rainforests. In the remote Amalau Valley live numerous bird species, as well as the region's two rare species of fruit bat.
The uninhabited islet of The Pola boasts magnificent sheer cliffs that are home to a huge seabird population. The Pola is just offshore from the lovely village of Vatia, which sits on one of Tutuila's coral-fringed bays. Some accommodation is available in Vatia.
The other islands in the national park are Ofu, Ta‘ū.
