Navajo Dam

The Navajo Dam is 123 m (402 feet) high and 1,112 m (3,648 feet) wide. It is on the San Juan River, near the Colorado line in the northwest of New Mexico. The dam was built between 1958 and 1963 by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. It is a major unit of the Colorado River storage project, a multipurpose plan, undertaken in 1956, to control the flow of the upper Colorado and its tributaries and to aid in the development of the rugged, remote upper Colorado River basin. The Navajo Dam regulates the flow of the San Juan River and provides flood control. Water impounded by the dam is used by the Navajos to irrigate a significant portion of land on the Navajo Native American Reservation.
