Nazaré

Nazaré

Nazaré used to be a small fishing village, but it has developed into one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Atlantic Costa de Prata (Silver Coast). Nazaré is made up of 3 districts.
Some places of interest in Nazaré include:

The northern part of Praia is called Praia do Norte (North Beach). It is popular with sirfers, as it features the world's largest waves. These waves occur because of the so-called Nazaré Canyon, an underwater canyon that runs perpendicular to the beach from Nazaré into the Atlantic Ocean. This canyon increases and converges the incoming ocean swell straight onto the beach at Nazaré. In conjunction with local currents it causes huge waves that can reach heights of up to 30 m. There are several viewing points to watch the surfers on these waves.

Every year on 8 September, the municipal holiday is celebrated as part of Our Lady Of Nazaré Festival. The festival lasts for 10 days and features processions, bullfights, fireworks, folk dancing and a fair.

Nazaré is about 100 km north of Lisboa (Lisbon).
