Newport (Maine)
Newport is a town in southern Maine. It was originally settled in 1808 as East Pond Plantation. In 1814, its name was changed to Newport.
In 1901, a fire destroyed the Maine Central Railroad freight depot and two mills. The fire also damaged 20 houses. Another fire in 1990, burned numerous building in Newport's historic downtown. That fire was started by two boys, aged 8 and 9.
Sebasticook Lake is located within the town's borders. Newport is 75 km northeast of Augusta.
