Ngaoundéré is the hot and dry northern terminus of Cameroon's main railway line. It is sometimes written as N'Gaoundéré and it used to be a quiet backwater, but since the influx of refugees from the Central African Republic and people fleeing from Boko Haram in northern Cameroon, its population has risen dramatically from 150,000 in 2005 to 1,500,000 in 2020.
The city's elders regularly meet in the chief's house known as Lamidal, or Lamido Palace. It lies behind the Lamido Grand Mosque and short ceremonies can be seen there twice a week on Fridays and Sundays.
The city was named after the nearby barren Mount Ngaoundéré. Lake Tison is also in de vicinity.
There are some places where you can stay in Ngaoundéré and food is available at many food stalls, especially near the railway station. There are some restaurants as well. The gare routière is opposite the railway station.
