The Niah Caves are not far from the town of Niah in the northwest of Sarawak. They are only accessible by longboat and a subsequent walk of about 3 km (1.86 mi). The caves boast interesting rock paintings and are surrounded by dense vegetation.
The caves are known for the bird's nest industry. The ceiling of the caves is divided into section, each of which is privately owned, including the nests of the swiftlets roosting there. The owners have the right to collect the nests, which is done twice a year in January and June. The process is done by climbing a long pole to the ceiling and scraping the nests only using a candle for light.
Jungle trails run through the area and night walks to see luminous mushrooms are available in Niah. There is quite some wildlife in the jungle around the Niah Caves.
There are some hotels and restaurants in Niah. The town is about 1,350 km east of Kuala Lumpur.
