Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay is one of Malawi's nicest lakeside towns and one of the main ports on Lake Malawi. It sits in a very scenic area of hills covered with lush vegetation. The market in town is very busy, but if you want more quiet surroundings, you can always visit the Kalwe Forest and watch its many birds.

There are various places that arrange scuba diving in Lake Malawi. Nkhata Bay sits on a large inlet of Lake Malawi. The town is 413 km (257 mi) north of Lilongwe.

Nkhata Bay is a main stopover place for people travelling through Malawi so there is a wide range of accommodation as well as many restaurants. You can get there by bus from Mzuzu, but it is also a regular stop for the ferries on Lake Malawi.
