Norwalk was settled in the 1850s. With the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1875, it became a center for the dairy and logging industries. Norwalk's main growth occurred after World War II, when rapid industrialization was prevalent. The annual Space, Science and Technology Show is held in Norwalk.
There are several places of interest in Norwalk. The Hargitt House dates from 1891. It houses the Hargitt House Museum. The Sproul House is a Victorial farmhouse that was built in 1870 by Nowalk's founder Gilbert Sproul. In 1962 it was donated to the city and nowadays it is home to the Gilbert Sproul Museum. The museum has an exhibition on the history of Norwalk.
Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Norwalk is in the south of California, 27 km (17 mi) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, 600 km southeast of Sacramento and 3,680 km west of Washington D.C.
