Norwalk was settled in 1649 at the mouth of the Norwalk River, on Long Island Sound. It was burned by the British during the American Revolution. Norwalk was an early oyster center, but its waters became too polluted for fish breeding.

Hats, clothing, electronic and electrical equipment, office machines and hardware are manufactured in Norwalk and aircraft research is carried on. The city has an amateur symphony orchestra.

There are numerous small islands in Norwalk's harbor and the city includes the artists' colony of Silvermine.

Various events are held in Norwalk annually. Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. The city is in the southwest of Connecticut, 90 km southwest of Hartford and 400 km northeast of Washington D.C.
