Nukulaelae Atoll

Nukulaelae Atoll

The Nukulaelae Atoll consists of two-dozen islets that host one of the only remaining pre-Christian worship sites in Tuvalu. The site consists of a large altar stone in the bush. The people on the atoll are quite friendly, despite the fact that Peruvians kidnapped almost 70% of the population in the middle of the 19th century.

The main town in Nukulaelae is Pepesala on the islet of Fangaua.

Some accommodation is available on the atoll. Nukulaelae is 120 km (75 miles) southeast of Funafuti. The only feasible way to get there is by private boat.
