Nukuoro is one of Pohnpei's outer atolls. The Nukuoro Atoll includes some 42 small islands that lie in a circle around a 6 km (4 mi) wide lagoon.
Nukuoro is an excellent place to get away from it all and just relax on the beach. Nukuoro's Polynesian inhabitants are very friendly and welcoming.
Nukuoro is known for its tino aitu sculptures, or carved deity sculptures. The statues are carved from breadfruit wood and represent gods and deified ancestors. They were traditionally placed in the malae (temple), or in the home, to protect it from bad fortune and ill-wishing spirits. Some of the oldest figurines can be seen in museums in Germany and Hawai'i.
Accommodation is available in the form of a guesthouse on Nukuoro's pier, but since there's no airport in Nukuoro, you can only get there by boat. The drawback is that the irregular passenger boat services the atoll only once a month, so the only feasable way to visit Nukuoro is by private yacht. Nukuoro Atoll is 485 km southwest of Palikir.
