Nuwara Eliya (නුවර එළිය)

Nuwara Eliya used to be one of the most popular hill stations of the British and it still retains the vestiges of Empire. There are numerous buildings that were erected in a blend of Tudor and Georgian architecture and boast gabled roofs. Immaculate lawns with rose bushes and moss-covered gravestones add to that sensation.

The Holy Trinity Church is on Church Road, adjacent to an old graveyard.

Nuwara Eliya's Hill Club includes a golf course, as well as tennis courts. There are nice botanic gardens not far from town and the surrounding hills are covered with tea plantations.

Victoria park is a good place for birdwatching. Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary is an area of montane forest not far east of the town. Nearby Lake Gregory is popular for fishing and boating.

Nuwara Eliya is a good place to stay if you want to visit Horton Plains National Park, where you can see many animal species.

The area around Nuwara Eliya is used for vegetable-growing. There are also many tea plantations.

Not too far from Nuwara Eliya are the 30 m tall Lovers Leap waterfalls

. According to legend, the waterfall got its name from a young couple who decided to be bound together forever by jumping off the cliff to their demise. There are numerous other waterfalls in the area.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Nuwara Eliya. The town has regular bus connections with both Colombo and Kandy If you prefer the train, you'll need to get off at Nanu Oya and take a bus or taxi from there. Nuwara Eliya is close to Sri Lanka's tallest mountain of Pidurutalagala, 100 km east of Colombo.
