Osian

Osian is an ancient Thar Desert oasis town, 55 km north of Jodhpur and 480 km southwest of Delhi. There are numerous beautifully ornate temples in Osian that were built bij Jains between the 8th and 12th centuries when they dominated the area. The Surya Temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and Katan Bawari are especially interesting. The Jain temple, dedicated to Mahavira, stands out for its beautiful architecture.

Osian has always been an important trading center, going back at least to the days of the Gupta period. This impoertant position ended when the town was attacked by the armies of Muhammed of Ghor in 1195.

Accommodation is available in Osian, but most people prefer to stay in Jodhpur, which has more facilities.
