Oualâta (ولاتة)

Oualâta is an oasis town, some 960 km east of Nouakchott. It used to be an important place on the trans-Saharan routes and there are several archaeological sites in the area confirming that. Many houses in town are nicely decorated, but the Prefect's House is the most beautiful one. Especially its courtyard is very picturesque.

The best way to get to Oualâta is by truck from Néma, 86 km to the south. Oualâta is a UNESCO world heritage site.
