Oujda (وجدة)

Oujda (وجدة)

The Moroccon city of Oujda, or Wajda, was founded in 994. It is the last city before the Algerian border when travelling between the capitals of Morocco and Algeria. It is 460 km northeast of Rabat in the northeast of Morocco.

Oujda is divided into two parts. The ville nouvelle is a bit like Casablanca and of little interest to travellers.

The old medina, however, is quite interesting. It is still partially walled and there are many small shops where mostly clothing is sold. The main entrance is Bab el Ouahab.

The old city features traditional Moroccan architecture with narrow, winding alleys. There are several bustling markets, including a jewelry market and a leather market.

The Grand Mosque of Oujda is one of the historically most important buildings in the city.

Oujda's central area is where most hotels are situated and it is for pedestrians only. There are numerous places that offer rooms and in the vicinity you will also find many restaurants.

The railway station is in the west of Oujda, a kilometer or so west of the hotel-area. The bus station is another kilometer further southwest, on the junction of the roads to Taza and Figuig. Buses to the Algerian border depart from Place du Maroc on the northeastern edge of the medina. The airport is north of town.

Just outside of Oujda are the Roman ruins of Bled el Gaada.
