Paphos

Paphos is a tourist city on the western coast of Cyprus about 10 km from the airport. Most accommodation and restaurants are located in Kato Paphos on the coast, while Paphos a few km inland has escaped most of the commercial development and still remains quite pleasant. There are some souvenir shops; and there are the ruins of a Lusignian building called Saránda Colónes. An earthquake destroyed it in the 13th century.

More ruins can be found at Kato Paphos. The most famous ones are the mosaics; remains of floors from Roman buildings, laid in the 3rd century. Excavations began in the early 1960s and the ruins cover an area of about 300sq m (980sq ft). These mosaics are considered to be the best ones in the Mediterranean. Most of the mosaics are dedicated to Dionysus.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) north of Kato Paphos there are many tombs carved into the soft rock of the sea-cliff known as the Tombs of the Kings.

As most visitors arrive on package tours, it is very hard to find accommodation in Paphos. Especially in the summer everything is full. It is better to go to Limassol 60 km to the east.
