Parc National Pic Macaya (Macaya National Park)

Pic Macaya is Haiti's best known national park. It sits in a mountainous area that is covered with some of Haiti's last remaining virgin cloud forest. The park was established in 1984 and measures 8,000 hectares.

Macaya National Park includes the 2,347 m (7,700 ft) high Pic Macaya (Macaya Peak), which can be climbed. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning.

The park is home to several endangered plant- and animal species, several of which are endemic to the island of Hispaniola, including more than 200 bird species, and more than 6,500 different plant species.

Hiking trips through the park are available. They take up to 8 days and include a guide. You should never attempt to visit the park without a guide.

Accommodation is available in the form of two basic campsites. Macaya National Park is located on Haiti's southern peninsula, within the Massif de la Hotte and some 175 km west of Port-au-Prince.
