Parc National de la Réunion (Réunion National Park) was established in 2007 to protect the endemic ecosystems of Réunion's mountainous interior, which is known as 'Les Hauts'. The park covers about 42% of Réunion and includes the active volcano of Piton de la Fournaise.
The landscape of the park consists of rugged volcanic fields, rain forests and sugar cane plantations. It has an exceptional biodiversity. It was included into the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 2010.
Parc National de la Réunion is an excellent destination for hiking and mountaineering. There are mountain lodges along the more than 900 km (560 mi) of hiking trails. The park's visitor's centre is called Maison du parc. It is located at La Plaine-des-Palmistes.
