The Blue River Park is usually very busy with locals during the weekends and on holidays, but the rest of the time you'll probably be the only visitor. The park boasts virgin forests of araucaria and kauri pine, swimming holes and many walking tracks. It is an excellent place for hikers and nature lovers. The park was established in 1980.

There are numerous bicycle and walking trail in the park, as well as picnic spaces and campsites.

Points of interest
  • One of the parks main features is the giant Grand Kaori. The tree is estimated to be more than 1,000 years old.
  • There are countless bird species in the park, including the red-crowned parakeet, the black honeyeater and New Caledonia's national bird: the cagou, which was once threatened with extinction. Thanks to a successful captive breeding and reintroduction program its numbers are now rising again.
  • Prehistoric Petroglyphs can be seen in the Blue River Valley. The rock carvings are evidence that humans have been living in the area since prehistoric times.
  • At the start of the 20th century, there was a lot of forestry and chrome mining in the region. The abandoned machinery can still be seen in many places in the park. The remains of railways and a traction engine winch can still be seen. The wooden Pérignon Bridge was built in 1958. It spanse the White River.
  • The Yaté Dam was constructed in 1958. Yaté Lake was formed behind it.
  • The Maison du Parc (Park House) is an exhibition space that is located at the park entrance. It has a display about the park and its birdlife. There is also a shop.
The Blue River Park is about 40 km (25 mi) inland from Nouméa. You can get there via the paved RT2. Buses that ply the route to Yaté stop at the park, but once inside the park, there's no public transport.
