Pariangan

Pariangan

According to legend, Pariangan was the cradle of the Minang kabau culture and the first village that the Minang ancestors founded after descending from Mount Merapi. Pariangan is one of the best-preserved traditional Minangkabau villages in Indonesia. There are numerous traditional houses in town, some of which date from the late 17th century. Pariangan's surau, or men's house, is one of the last of its kind still in use. Other interesting sights include the open council grounds with ancient stone seats, the mosque and the town's hot spring.

There are some hotels and restaurants in Pariangan. The town sits on the lower slopes of Mount Marapi in the west of Sumatra.
