Parkersburg was settled in 1785. It is an industrial and shipping center in a coal region and it has industries that manufacture aluminum products, plastics and paint. Not far from town, in the Ohio River, is historic Blennerhassett Island. There are several museums in Parkersburg, including the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, the Henry Cooper House, the Oil and Gas Museum, the Sumnerite African-American History Museum, the Artcraft Studio and the Veterans Museum of Mid-Ohio Valley. The city boasts some nice parks.

Accommodation and restaurants are available in Parkersburg. The city is in the northwest of West Virginia, at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and the Ohio rivers, 100 km north from Charleston and 400 km northwest from Washington D.C.
