The Podocarpus National Park was established in 1982. It boasts a wide variety of natural habitats, as well as a large amount of plant and animal species. It is thought that the majority of the species in the park has not been discovered yet. The park is in the southernmost part of Ecuador, not far southeast of Loja, which is 440 km south of Quito.
You can enter the park from the Cajanuma Sector, 8 km (5 mi) south of Loja, or from the Bombuscaro Sector. There are also unguarded entrances at the Romerillos Sector and at Cerro Toledo. The towns of Vilcabamba and Zamora sit right next to the park and serve as entrance point as well. There are walking trails inside the park, as well as places to camp.
