Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael (Laguna San Rafael National Park)
Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael (Laguna San Rafael National Park) is difficult and expensive to get to, but despite of that it is a very popular destination and visited by thousands of people each year. The park compromises 1.7-million hectare (4.2 million acre) of glaciers, fjords, floating icebergs and mountain scenery on the Pacific coast of southern Chile's Aisén region.
The park was established in 1959 and it was named after the San Rafael Lagoon that was formed by the melting and subsequent retreat of the San Rafael Glacier.
The park is excellent for hiking, although the terrain is rough, wild and unforgiving. Animals that live in the park's waters include otters, sea lions and elephant seals and birds such as ducks, albatross and Magellanic penguins, while the surrounding forests are home to pudús, pumas and foxes.
You can get to the park by air from Colhaique or by using one of the expensive ferry services from Puerto Chacabuco. Accommodation is available in both towns, as well as restaurants.
