Nukai Peniamina is the man that was credited with introducing Christianity to Niue in 1846. His grave is on the island's western coast, about 4.5 km (2.5 miles) north from Alofi. Peniamina himself was converted to Christianity by the London Missionary Society, whilst in Samoa. Aided by a Samoan missionary known as Paulo, he managed to convert the majority of Niue's population to Christianity in about a decade. Most people in Niue are buried on their family land and you will see many gravestones scattered around the island.
Just offshore from Peniamina's Grave are the two excellent dive sites of Namoui and Anono. There is also a marine reserve, which is home to turtles that are protected there.
