Philae (فيلة)

Philae (فيلة)

Philae is a temple complex on Agilkia Island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, which is downstream of the Aswan Dam. The complex was originally located on Philae Island, which was flooded after the construction of the Aswad Low Dam in 1902. The bricks of the Philae temples soon became encrusted with silt and other debris carried by the Nile and the colors of the temples' reliefs were washed away.

During the 1960's, a third of the temples were submerged all year round. To protect the complex, the monuments were cleaned and dismantled stone by stone and moved to its current location between 1977 and 1980. Philae is included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
