Philipsburg is the largest town and capital of Sint Maarten. It sits on the narrow strip of land that separates the Great Salt Pond from Great Bay. Most activity takes place around the waterfront road of Frontstreet. There are numerous colourful buildings in Philipsburg-

Points of interest
  • The Constitutioneel Hof (Constitutional Court) was established in 2010. It is housed in a beautiful wooden building that was constructed in 1793.
  • The Foga Salt Factory.
  • Fort Amsterdam was the first fort the Dutch built in the Caribbean. It dates from 1631 and sits on the peninsula that separates Great Bay and Little Bay. When the Spanish took over, they expanded the fort and built a small chapel. Little remains of the fort, but its hilltop location offers good views over Philipsburg.
  • Great Bay BeachGreat Bay Beach is the main beach in town.
  • The Market Place.
  • The Philipsburg Methodist ChurchPhilipsburg Methodist Church was inaugurated in 1851. It is located in Front Street.
  • The Rinkhouse.
  • The Sint Maarten Museum has exhibitions of Arawak pottery shards, artefacts and photographs from colonial times, several items from the HMS Proselyte, a ship that sank off the coast from Fort Amsterdam in 1801 and an exhibition on Hurricane Luis, which caused severe damage in 1995.
  • On the northern side of the Great Salt Pond is the Sint Maarten Zoo & Botanical Garden, where numerous animal species can be seen.
  • The Catholic Sint Martinus van Tours Kerk (St. Martin of Tours Church) was completed in 1844. The building was expanded in 1952. It is located at Voorstraat 51.
  • Wathey Square is the center of town. It overlooks Great Bay and features the beautiful 1793-built courthouse. Hawkers can be found everywhere around the square.
There are many hotels, café, bars, casinos, shops and restaurants in Philipsburg. The town is located on the southern coast of Sint Maarten.
