Polonnaruwa
In ancient times, Polonnaruwa used to be called Pulathisipura and Vijayarajapura. On one side of town are the remains of the ancient lakeside city of Polonnaruwa, which dates mostly from the reign of the Indian Chola dynasty in the 11th and 12th century. The ruins cover a small area and have been marvelously repaired. On the other side is the modern town of Polonnaruwa, which is often referred to as New Town.
The ancient town is inscribed in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
Polonnaruwa is 175 km northeast of Colombo.
