Port Said (بورسعيد)
Port Said was founded in 1859 by the ruler Said Pasha as a base for the workforce digging the Suez Canal. The city was bombed several times, once in 1956 as a result of the Suez crisis and again in 1967 and 1973 when Egypt was in war with Israel. Most of the damaged buildings have been repaired, but you will still find some reminders of the bombings.
Many of the city's buildings are in colonial style with large balconies. There are also some beautiful gardens. The city also boasts various good museums, including:
- Port Said National Museum is located on Palestine Street in front of the tourist jetty and not far from the city center. It has exhibitions on the history of Port Said and Egypt.
- The Port Said Military Museum was opened in 1964. It is located in 23 July Street and its exhibitions tell the story of the Egyptian resistance in Port Said during the Suez Crisis in 1956, as well as the wars of 1967 and 1973. In one of its halls you can see an exhibition on Suez and the Suez Canal.
- The Museum of Modern Art in Egypt is located in Shohada Square, beneath the Obelisk of Martyrs. Its exhibitions contain modern and contemporary art.
- The Museum of the Authority of the Suez Canal was inaugurated in 2015. It has an exhibition of the history of the Suez Canal.
Port Said is located on land reclaimed from Lake Manzela, at the northern end of the Suez Canal. Causeways connect the city to the mainland. Port Said is also connected by ferry to the towns of Al-Matariyya and Port Fouad, on the other side of the Suez Canal. The city extends for some 30 km (19 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
From the city you have a good view over the entrance to the Suez Canal, where numerous ships line up to wait their turn to enter it. Port Said is km from Cairo.
