Porto

Porto

Porto coat of arms

Porto is a sprawling city built on the hills around the Douro River. The area was settled by the Romans in the 2nd century BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. The Ponte Dom Luis I is a steel bridge that spans the river and provides magnificent views over the city. At the foot of the bridge there is a small harbor from where boat cruises on the river are offered. There are a number of mosaic-tiled churches and chapels in Porto; and you will find many small parks with fountains all over town.

Porto is known for its Port wine, which was named after the city.

Porto lies 280 km north of the capital Lisbon. There are good connections to many places all over Portugal. There are many hotels and restaurants in Porto. The city center was inscribed into the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 1996.
