Portsmouth is a city in Ohio, on the north bank of the Ohio River. The state of Kentucky is on the other side of the river.
There used to be numerous historic buildings in Portsmouth, but many have been demolished because of poor upkeep. Luckily many other historic buildings survive, including:
- The Boneyfiddle Historic District features numerous historic buildings.
- The Columbia Theater was originally built in 1910. The historic building was destroyed by a fire in 2007 and rebuilt in 2007 as the open-air Columbia Music Hall.
- The old monastery can be seen from afar.
- Another historic building is the Spartan Stadium. It was built in 1930, as the home for the Portsmouth Spartans.
- The Miami University Art Museum.
- The Portsmouth Public Library was founded in 1879.
- The Southern Ohio Museum opened in 1979. It has a wide variety of exhibitions, including artwork , China dolls, Native American artifacts and works by local artists.
Despite of Portsmouth being built on higher ground, it used to suffer from seasonal flooding. After a flood in 1937, a floodwall was constructed, which subsequently protected the city from floods in 1964 and in 1997. In 1992, a Wall of Fame was instigated, by placing stars in honour of natives that have accomplished important things. Later, large murals were added.
The Indian Head Rock is a large sandstone boulder that was used to record low river stages. After a dam was built in 1917, the boulder was submerged. In 2007, it was recovered and after a legal battle of ownership between Ohio and kentucky, it was returned to Kentucky in 2010.
