Pulau Nias (Nias Island)
Pulau Nias, Tanö Niha, or Nias Island, has largely been unaffected by Indian, Islamic and European influences that swept through most of the archipelago. The people on Nias haved lived in relative isolation for centuries and the island has developed a unique culture.
Most villages are laid out round a central plaza and still primarily made up of tradition houses. War dances and the famous 'stow jumping' are still part of daily life, but are also performed for tourists.
Because of the excellent waves around Nias, the island has become popular with surfers. The best surf is found around Lagundri Bay. The beachfront around this tiny bay is lined with tiny losman, warungs and a few western-style cafés. The bay is known as Surf Central, but it is also scam central, as the visitors attract countless conmen.
There are several hotels and restaurants on Nias. The island is about 140 km (85 mi) long and 50 km (30 mi) wide. It has a rugged terrain.
