Sīdi Bū S'īd (Sidi Bou Saïd, سيدي بو سعيد)

Sīdi Bū S'īd, or Sidi Bou Saïd, is a beautiful small, whitewashed village high on a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis, about 10km (6mi) northeast of Tunis. The easiest way to get there is by taking the TGM train from Tunis.

There is nothing special to see, but it is just very nice to stroll around in the narrow cobbled streets with old stone steps. Many walls are covered with ornate, curved window grills that are specific for the area. They are usually painted deep blue. You will find many colorful arched doorways to courtyards full of geraniums and bougainvillea.

Place Sidi Bou Saïd is the main square, that features many cafés, sweet stalls and souvenir shops. The lighthouse above the town stands on the site of a 9th century fort. A small, not so crowdy beach can be found close by.

Sīdi Bū S'īd was named after Abu Said al-Baji, who was a religious resident there. The town was formerly known as Jbel el-Menar.
