Salem (Ohio)
Salem was settled by Quakers in 1806. It was an early abolitionist center and an important station on the Underground Railroad, the loosely organized system for helping fugitive slaves escape to Canada or to areas of safety in free states. Nowadays it is a center where tools and dies, industrial machinery, appliances and pumps are manufactured. A branch of Kent State University is in town.
The center of town boasts several historic buildings and registered as the Salem Downtown Historic District.
Salem sits in a coal region in the northeast of Ohio, some 390 km northwest of Washington D.C.
