Salisbury (England)
Most people visit Salisbury to see many churches. An ancient cathedral once stood at a place north of present-day Old Sarum. A new cathedral was constructed close to the confluence of the Avon, Nadder and Bourne rivers and a settlement slowly grew around it. In 1227 it received city rights and was known as New Sarum. In 2009 its name was changed to Salisbury.
Churches
The forementioned Salisbury Cathedral is officially known as the cathedral church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.St. Martin's Church is one of the oldest churches in Salisbury. There is evidence that an earlier church once stood on the location where it was built. The oldest parts of the church date from around 1230. In the 14th century, a tower was added and the nave and aisles date from the 15th century. The church is located on the southern side of Milford Hill, outside of the old town.The church of St. Edmund's was inaugurated in 1269. It used to be larger than its contemporary form, but in 1653, its central tower collapsed, causing major damage to the building. It was decided to demolish its nave and to build a new tower. In 1766, a chancel was added. The church became redundant and in 1975 the Salisbury Arts Centre was housed there. From 2003 to 2005 the former church was enlarged.St. Thomas' church dates from the 13th century. 200 years later it was rebuilt in its curent form. It is famous for its 15th-century doom painting above the chancel arch. St. Thomas church is just west of the market square.St. George's church dates from the 12th century. It was altered 2 centuries later. The church is at West Harnham.The church of St. Lawrence was built in the 13th century. It was originally a chapelry of St Martin's. It is in Stratford-sub-Castle.The small church of St. Andrew was built in the 14th century, on the site of an earlier church.The Catholic church of St. Osmund's dates from 1848. It is located in the center of town, on Exeter Street.The Evangelical St. Paul's church dates from 1853. It replaced the 14-century church of St. Clement's. The church sits at the beginning of Devizes road.The All Saints' church is a small church that was built in 1854 in East Harnham.St. John's church dates from 1861. It served as a church until 2010, after which it was closed. In 2016 it reopened as a community center.Construction of the church of St. Mark's started in 1894, but it was not completed until 1915.The Methodist Church dates form 1811.span class="b">The United Reformed Church was built in 1879.Emmanuel Church dates from 1860 and is located on Wilton Road.The Roman Catholic church of St. Gregory and the English Martyrs was constructed in 1938.The Evangelical St. Francis's church dates from 1940.Some other places of interest in Salisbury include the

Five Rivers Indoor Bowls Club and
Salisbury Snooker Club share a building on Tollgate Road.
Salisbury Playhouse serves as the city's theatre, while
City Hall is used as an entertainment venue.
Salisbury Arts Centre is housed in the redundant church of St. Edmund's. The ruins of
Old Wardour Castle
are not far from town.
There are many any hotels and restaurants in Salisbury. The city is a good place to stay if you want to visit Stonehenge, 13 km (8 mi) to the northeast. Salisbury is some 30 km (20 mi) from
Southampton, 50 km (30 mi) from
Bath and 135 km east from London.
