Sapporo (札幌市)
The area that is nowadays known as Sapporo was first settles over 15,000 years ago. The settlements slowly grew and nowadays Sapporo is one of the world's largest cities. It is the capital of Japan's Hokkaidō prefecture and best known as the place that hosted the 1972 winter Olympics and for its annual Snow Festival. Sapporo is an important winter sports center and during the winter (November-February) it is packed with holiday makers.
There are numerous point of interest in Sapporo, some of which are listed here:
- Susukino is the entertainment district of Sapporo.
- The former Hokkaidō government office building houses a museum shop, a tourist information office and a few historical exhibition rooms and libraries.
- The wooden Sapporo Clock Tower houses a museum.
- The Hokkaidō Shrine.
- Nishino Shrine.
- Historical Village of Hokkaidō is an open-air museum.
- Sapporo Buried Cultural Property Center displays the Sapporo's buried cultural properties.
- The Edwin Dun Memorial Hall.
- The Hokkaidō University & Hokkaidō University Museum.
- The Sapporo TV Tower offeres great views over the city from its observation deck.
- The Sapporo Convention Center.
- The Sunpiazza Aquarium.
- Sapporo JR Tower is a skyscraoer and shopping mall. It sits adjacent to Sapporo Station.
- Sapporo Ramen Yokocho and the buillding with a ferris wheel known as Norubesa are in Susukino district.
- Tanuki Kōji Shopping Arcade is also in the district. It is the oldest shopping mall in Sapporo.
- The district of Jōzankei in Minami-ku offers many resort hotels with steam baths and onsen.
- The Peace Pagoda was constructed to promote peace.
Apaert from the museum at Hokkaidō University, there are numerous other interesting museums in Sapporo. Some of them include the Hokkaidō Museum, the Sapporo City Archive Museum, the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo Salmon Museum, located in Makomanai Park.
Other nice parks in Sappore are:
- Odori Park.
- Nakajima Park.
- Moerenuma Park.
- Maruyama Park is located next to the Hokkaidō Shrine and is home to the Maruyama Zoo.
- Nishioka Park consists of marshland and forest and is centered on the Tsukisamu River and its upper river basin. There is a pond and home to many bird species.
- Asahiyama Memorial Park sits on a hill and offers great views of the city.
- Hokkaidō University Botanical Gardens.
- The Chizaki Rose Garden.
- Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill includes a farm with sheep. There is also a statue of William S. Clark.
There are numerous hotels, bars, café's and restaurants in the city. Sapporo is 840 km north of Tokyo.
