Scarborough

Scarborough

The town of Scarborough is located on the island of Tobago. It became the island's capital in 1769, replacing Georgetown, which had been the capital up to then. When Tobago was united with Trinidad, Port-of-Spain became the new capital.

During the times of French occupation, the town was renamed Port-Louis, but after the French left, its original name was returned. The town was named after Scarborough in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

The main sight in Scarborough is Fort King George, which dominates the town. The fort was constructed in the 18th century and it was named after King George III. The fort houses a historic and archaeologic museum.

Shaw Park Cultural Complex is a large arts theater that can seat 5,000 spectators. There is also a library in Scarborough. In 1991, a deepwater harbour was built.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Scarborough and the island's main airport is only 11 km away at Crown Point. The town is connected with Port-of-Spain by ferry. Scarborough is located in the western part of Tobago.
