Shendi (Shandi, شندي)

Shendi (Shandi, شندي)

Shendi, also spelled as Shandi, used to be a large market town during the 18th century, but nowadays there is little activity and most people only go there to visit the Meroitic ruins of the Naqa and Musawwarat temples.

Shandi is on the Nile River, 150 km northeast of Khartoum and about 45 km southwest from Meroë.

Former president Omar al-Bashir was born in the nearby village of Hosh Bannaga. There are several hotels and restaurants in Shendi.

Because of civil war it is not recommended to travel to Shendi (Shandi, شندي), or any other destination in Sudan at this moment.
