Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia, not far from the equator. It consists of one large main island, where most people live and 64 smaller islands. The current city was established in 1819, as a trading post of the British Empire. In 1963 it became part of the federation of Malaysia and two years later it became an independent country.
Singapore has developed rapidly and has become the most developed country in Asia. Tourism a one of the country's main economic pillars, annually it receives 3 times more tourists than its total population.
There are numerous places of interst in Singapore. Some of the main sights in the country are the Baba House, one of the country's best-preserved Paranakan heritage houses; Singapore's largest mosque: the Sultan Mosque; the green Jamae Mosque; St. Andrew's Cathedral; Chinatown and its heritage center; Thian Hock Keng Temple, Chinatown's oldest Hokkien temple; Chinese Garden; at Joo Chiat street you can see houses built in the colourful Peranakan (Malay and Chinese interracial marriage) style; the Peranakan Terrace Houses; Lian Shan Shuan Lin Monastery, which dates from 1898; the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple; the colourful Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple; the Merlion; the Esplanade; Marina Bay Sands; the Ferris Wheel at Marina Bay Sands; the botanical garden of Gardens by the Bay; Singapore Botanic Gardens; Singapore Zoo; Bird Paradise and Night Safari, in the north of Singapore; River Wonders is home to 300 animal species; Chijmes; the Singapore Flyer; the Orchard Road shopping belt; the Victoria Theatre and the resort island of Sentosa, where you can see Fort Siloso, built in the 1880's. Sentosa also has a cable car that provides magnificent views over the island.
Some of the country's most interesting museums are the National Museum of Singapore; National Gallery of Singapore; Asian Civilizations Museum; Peranakan Museum; the Singapore Musical Box Museum; the ArtScience Museum and the Changi Museum includes a chapel to commemorate WWII pow's, who suffered under the Japanese.
For a birds-eye view of the city you should visit the 50th floor of the Pinnacle@Duxton. It consists of seven buildings that are interconnected via sky-bridges. It is the world’s largest public housing complex. Jewel Changi international airport is absolutely stunning and you should visit it even if you don't fly into Singapore.
Most hotels and restaurants are located in the Orchard Road district, where you can also find large shopping centers.
