There are 14 distinct wine-growing regions in Slovenia, many of which have been producing grapes since before Roman times. Two of the most important areas for white wine, the Haloze Hills and the Jeruzalem-Ljutomer district, are just outside the town of Ptuj and can be reached on foot from there.
The Haloza Hills lie south of Ptuj and extend all the way to the border with Croatia. Some 11 km (7) miles) southwest of Ptuj is Borl Castle, from where the Haloze Trail (Haloska Pot) runs through the beautiful region of hills, vineyards, cornfields and large areas filled with sunflowers.
The Jeruzalem-Ljutomer vinska cesta (wine road) runs from Ljutomer, via the village of Jeruzalem to Ormoz on the Croatian border. Along the way are countless cellars and small restaurants where the region's white wines can be sampled.
