Soča Valley

Soča Valley

The Soča Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. It stretches from Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, to the Italian city of Nova Gorizia down south.

The valley is defined by the 138 km (86 mi) long Soča River (also known as Isonzo River).

During WWI the region was the site of the Soča Front, where fighting cost an estimated 1 million people their lives. In 1917 the combined forces of Austrian, German, Hungarian and Slovenian armies met at the town of Kobarid, where they defeated the Italian army. This victory was the greatest breakthrough of WWI.

Some of the sights in the valley include the Velika Korita Soče (Big Soča Gorge), Mala Korita Soče (the Little Soča Gorge), Kozjak Falls, Virje Falls, and the Tolminska Korita (Tolmin Gorges).

Another interesting town in the valley, is the adventure sports center of Bovec.
