Sorata has one of the most beautiful settings in Bolivia. It sits in a lush valley at the base of the 6,362 m (20,867 feet) high Illampú and the 6,427 m (21,080 feet) high Ancohuma peaks that are popular for hiking, trekking and climbing. About 10 km (6 miles) from town is the Gruta de San Pedro, a cave with an underground lake.
Sorata's main square is called Plaza General Enrique Penaranda. It is surrounded by large date palms and beautiful gardens. Casa Gunthere is a historic mansion that was built in 1895 and houses the Residencial Sorata.
Every year on 14 September, a major fiesta is held in Sorata. Accommodation is available in town and there are several restaurants. Sorata is 100 km northwest of La Paz, 520 km northwest of Sucre and east of Lake Titicaca.
